About us

We are a year-long experiment of a "micro-venue" and clubhouse in Whakatū Nelson. A “third space” that:

  • Comfortably holds 10 to 75 people
  • Has a small stage and movie screen
  • Has all-ages events
  • Progressive activist meeting spaces
  • Is self-run, self-funded, anti-capitalist and completely independent

It does not compete with current indie bars and events. It will also not be the end-of-the-night destination. It is the place in-between.

Run as a not-for-profit run by volunteers and funded primarily by membership fees.

Members form the heart of our space, getting free entry to weekly events and heavily discounted rates for weekend and major events. They are also able to use the space to create community events. You'll receive invitations to all community discussions and have a voice in shaping our direction.
And at night, access to a venue hosting intimate band performances; youth-run gigs; Niche DJ sets; cult film nights; standup comedy; Board game and D&D nights; potluck dinners, LAN parties; hiphop and chess nights; poetry slams ….

Our Kaupapa

Whakatū Arts and Action is created by community, with community, for community.

With progressive values we are builiding a shared space to support creativity and strengthen community

  1. We are Tangata tiriti that stand in active solidarity with struggles against oppression.
  2. Voting members make decisions quickly by considering evidence and prioritising community cohesion over individual preference. When conflict arises, we slow down and listen.
  3. We’re transparent about money. Significant spending decisions are made together.
  4. We choose events and partnerships that align with our values and benefit the broader community.
  5. We share the tasks of leadership, caring for the space, and contributing ideas. Everyone’s input is valued and everyone’s voice matters.
  6. This is just the beginning. We will keep adapting as we learn.

Our Constitutional objectives

  1. To provide a creative space for niche local artists, designers, and performers in the Nelson region.
  2. To support and advocate for up-and-coming artists and local progressive causes.
  3. To foster an inclusive, progressive community that supports LGBTQIA+ rights, Te Tiriti commitments, immigrant solidarity, evidence-based science, and public health.
